Richard Scher is the director of communications for the Maryland Port Administration – Port of Baltimore. Based in Baltimore, Maryland he oversees a department that leads the Maryland Port Administration’s internal and external communications initiatives which help to promote the Port of Baltimore to the media and public.
Mr. Scher’s responsibilities include serving as the Maryland Port Administration’s spokesperson to daily local, national and international media requests as well as leading the Port of Baltimore’s cargo, cruise, and environmental communications and public affairs initiatives through different platforms including social media, the Port of Baltimore magazine, Port of Baltimore app, press releases, and media events. Mr. Scher oversees the design, layout, and drafting of the Port’s digital and print cargo and cruise ads for mainstream and trade media outlets. Under Mr. Scher’s leadership, the Maryland Port Administration has won international, national, and local awards for its communications and marketing work.
Mr. Scher is a member of the Public Relations Society of America – Maryland Chapter and advisory panel chair for the American Association of Port Authorities Seaports Magazine. He’s also a past member of the Baltimore Public Relations Council.
Prior to his position at the Maryland Port Administration, Mr. Scher held the position of director of communications for the Maryland Transit Administration. He began his career in 1997 as public information officer for the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration followed by his time as a public affairs officer for the Maryland Department of Transportation. Mr. Scher is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati and resides in Columbia, Maryland.
